I have numerous friends who have a "life-time" of lyrics written down in a notebook or on
their computer. Some of the lyrics they have written are not so good. But some are
down-right beautiful. In fact, they are poetry.
The beauty of lyrics, as opposed to poetry, is that lyrics are intended for a greater
purpose. Not only are they meant to stir-up emotion when read, but they are created for
the voice to influx more so that when just read. They require a melody. This is what
separates lyrics from poetry. And when lyrics are combined with a melody sung over a
carefully thought out chord progression, the end result can be life-altering for both
composer and listener.
For this reason I am writing. I have enjoyed poetry ever since I enrolled in a literature
class at my local college in Southern Utah, Dixie State College. We read a ton of poetry,
but the stuff that really stuck with me were the words written by Edgar Allen Poe. Now, I
understand that his poetry is not usually considered as "beautiful" as others. In fact, one
may argue that it is depressing and twisted. I agree. But, the poem "Annabel Lee" is one
that I love and decided shortly after reading it, that I would write a melody to sing it to. I
did, and was shocked by the results. I have since then and prior to then composed
many songs and melodies and have recorded them in my home studio in Santa Clara,
UT. I love to write music, not only my own lyrics, but my own melodies and chord
progressions. I am in the process of writing a musical.
Anyway, going back to my initial point. I know of many people who have written beautiful
poetry in lyric form and have never taken the next step to completing their masterpiece.
There is no music. The sole purpose of their lyrics (to be sung to music) rarely takes
place. That's where I step in.
I have taken many of my friends lyrics and have composed them a chord progression
and a melody that fits with their words and have recorded it to CD. More time than not,
the lyricist is speechless when finally hearing the completed product of their words
mixed with my music and quickly give me another set of lyrics to "do it again". I have
greatly enjoyed the process of helping people complete their masterpieces and extend
an invitation to anyone looking to complete their lyrics with music. Please listen to our
sample recordings and read our testimonial page at www.my-love-notes.com.
